Akagera Game Park Safari

Located in the Eastern Province of Rwanda, Akagera National Park is a true haven for wildlife with typical savannah landscapes of acacia woods and open grasslands, many lakes, and papyrus swamps and marshes. Visitors can see an array of stunning birds around the park’s numerous waterways, and many animals including zebras, antelopes, and giraffes roaming across the park. The incredible “Big 5” also make their home here: lion, elephant, leopards, cape buffalo, and rhinos, which are being protected and bred to bring the species to less endangered status. This will be a wonderful and unforgettable day-long safari.

  • Day 1: Travel to Akagera National Park

The driver guide will pick you up at 9 AM from your hotel in Kigali, stopping at a favorite coffee shop/art gallery along the way. Travel to Akagera is about 2.5 hours. Upon arrival you will check-in, have lunch, and relax. Later in the afternoon, take a sunset boat ride safari on Lake Ihema where you will see hippos, various bird sanctuaries, and animals on the shore.

Day 2: Safari and Return to Kigali

After an early breakfast, pick up your lunch boxes, meet your driver and park guide to set off for a classic wildlife game drive. You will travel from the south of the park, to the Northern exit, passing through an incredible array of landscapes and home to thousands of species of plants and animals. Afterwards, return to Kigali.

Please wear classic long sleeved /long pants “safari clothes” for the game drive. Wear light colored clothing as the teetsee flies are attracted to black and blues. Spraying your clothes with permethrin is highly recommended. The weather should be beautiful and dry in June.

Gorilla Trek at Volcanoes National Park

The Virunga Volcanic range across Rwanda, Uganda and DRC is the only place in the world where there are Mountain Gorillas. Volcanoes National Park is in Rwanda, where the majestic, and endangered (although their numbers are growing substantially through conservation efforts) gorillas live. Experienced guides follow the gorillas and sleep nearby, making the gorilla family you are assigned to much easier to find. The primates are friendly, and you will be able to observe them from incredibly close proximity, making this a truly unforgettable experience.

Visitors must 15 or older to enter.

  • Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel in Kigali and travel approximately 3 hours through Rwanda’s beautiful countryside to Volcanoes National park. Upon arrival, enjoy lunch either at your hotel or at the Dian Fossey Museum.

    Day 2: Gorilla Trekking

After breakfast, you will travel to park headquarters with the car and driver you came with.  There, you will  be assigned to your gorilla family, attend a briefing with your guide, and get a cappuccino from YES! Coffee…all prior to your trek. You start in the safari truck, drive to your destination, and walk between 30 minutes to 2 hours (ESTIMATED TIME, as the gorillas move!) to the gorillas. Some of the gorilla families live close by and others quite far, and there are varying degrees of difficulty for the hike. You have ONE HOUR with the primates, and then walk back to the truck and return to your hotel. Lunch is included at your hotel after your trek. There is a MAXIMUM of 8 people that can go on each hike. The typical safari truck has seating for 5-7 people, so we will help you plan.

This area of Rwanda is very cool, and damp in climate. We suggest a light down coat, layers, jeans, hiking boots/shoes & gardening gloves during the hike (where you may encounter stinging nettle). Be sure to bring a backpack for layers of clothing, snacks and water during your hike. A cell phone is “all the camera” that you will need. The primates are very close!
